Overview

The Research Department at Heart and Vascular Institute of Texas was formed in 1994 to support the scientific interests of our 13 board-certified, fellowship-trained, cardiologists. These physicians have conducted over 60 (Phase II – IV) clinical trials of the latest investigational medicines, devices, and gene therapies. With a searchable database of over 100,000 patients, our 13 physicians are readily able to exceed the enrollment expectations of our sponsors. Our site also experiences few patients who are lost to follow-up or who withdraw consent. This trend is due to our thorough screening methods, enthusiastic coordinators, and pre-established rapport with our patients.

Our site is capable of utilizing a central Institutional Review Board (IRB). We are also proficient working with the local hospital-based IRBs. Our physicians are credentialed to practice within the Baptist Health System (5 hospitals), CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Healthcare System (2 hospitals), Methodist Healthcare System (3 hospitals), and the physician-owned, state-of-art TexSAn Heart Hospital. Of interest, the Heart Hospital waives IRB jurisdiction to Western IRB.

Heart and Vascular Institute of Texas is conveniently located less than 5 miles from San Antonio International Airport. Our facility includes 22 exam rooms, 64-slice CT scanner, 2 nuclear cameras, 3 echocardiography / vascular laboratories, 2 crash carts, CLIA certified laboratory, Coumadin® and pacemaker clinics. All of our equipment (e.g., centrifuges, weight scales, sphygmomanometers, electrocardiographs, -70°C Freezer, etc.) is routinely maintained and calibrated by a local biomedical vendor, according to each manufacturer’s specifications. Investigational product is stored in a limited-access, double-locking, temperature-controlled storage area. Clinical Research Associates and auditors are provided with ample work area and high-speed Internet access.
